ShortPoint designs the experience: branded, interactive intranet pages built from 250+ templates or a single prompt. Most teams don’t have to choose. Here’s what each one does, what it costs, and how they fit together.

The short answer

Can Copilot in SharePoint build your intranet?

In brief Partly. Since general availability began on September 30, 2026, Copilot in SharePoint can create pages and plan new sites with pages, lists, libraries and sample content, for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Creating entire sites uses Copilot Credits, and AI site creation is still labeled preview. What it builds is a structure on SharePoint’s native web parts, not a designed, branded intranet. ShortPoint adds that design layer, and both work inside SharePoint in your Microsoft 365 tenant.

Use ShortPoint to…

  • Design on-brand intranet pages without code
  • Start from 250+ templates or an AI prompt
  • Brand every site from one Theme Builder
  • Add search, filters, directories and live data

Use Copilot in SharePoint to…

  • Answer questions and summarize files
  • Draft page copy from your documents
  • Autofill metadata and automate libraries
  • Scaffold team and project sites
What Copilot in SharePoint does

Copilot in SharePoint at a glance

Microsoft uses a hybrid model: everyday work is included with the Microsoft 365 Copilot license, and “advanced work” is billed in Copilot Credits through usage-based billing that an admin must turn on.

Included with the license

No extra cost
  • Ask questions, find content and catch up
  • Create HTML, Word, Excel or PowerPoint files
  • Create and edit pages, libraries and lists
  • Simple rules, approvals and workflows
  • Create and manage skills; Autofill metadata

Needs Copilot Credits

Usage-based
  • Create entire sites and solutions
  • Create and edit files, pages, lists and libraries at scale
  • Multistep AI workflows and scheduled automations
  • Real-time Autofill and large-scale document review
  • Generate or edit images; site and page analytics
Who sees it

Only users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license see the Copilot button. Microsoft’s overview notes it doesn’t appear on SharePoint Home, in Viva Connections or on SharePoint sites in Teams, and site owners can hide it from visitors in Site AI settings.

Where it doesn’t run

GCC, GCC High, DoD, air-gapped and 21Vianet clouds don’t currently support Copilot in SharePoint.

What changes Nov 1, 2026

Preview PowerShell controls retire. Admins manage availability with Site AI settings and Restricted Content Discovery.

Where they differ

Four differences that decide the intranet

Both work inside SharePoint in your Microsoft 365 tenant, and both use AI, but it runs in different places: Microsoft’s cloud for Copilot, Google Cloud for ShortPoint AI Designer. The difference is what the AI is for, who can use it, and what the bill looks like.

01 A site structure vs. a designed intranet

Copilot in SharePoint

When Copilot creates a site, it follows an approved plan to set up the site, navigation, lists, libraries and pages with sample content. Microsoft lists advanced web parts, third-party integrations, column formatting and permission setup as not supported, to be finished by hand afterwards.

In short Pages use SharePoint’s native web parts and site theme. Strong for team, project and document sites; limited for a designed, employee-facing intranet.

ShortPoint

ShortPoint is built for the part that comes next: the page people actually see. Start from 250+ page and section templates, use 80+ design elements, and brand every site from Theme Builder. AI Designer reads your Theme Builder settings and generates pages that are already on-brand.

2 weeks DSOA rebuilt its entire intranet with ShortPoint, down from 3 months.

Better together

Copilot writes the content. ShortPoint designs the page.

If your organization already licenses Microsoft 365 Copilot, ShortPoint doesn’t replace that spend. It adds the design layer Copilot doesn’t cover. Here’s how teams build one intranet page with both.

In Copilot in SharePoint

Works on your content

  1. 1 Summarize the source documents Turn a policy library or handbook into key points.
  2. 2 Draft the page copy Headlines, intros and an FAQ grounded in your files.
  3. 3 Keep libraries organized Autofill metadata so the right documents surface.

In ShortPoint

Designs the experience

  1. 1 Start from a template or a prompt Pick one of 250+ templates or describe the page to AI Designer.
  2. 2 Apply the brand once Theme Builder sets colors, fonts and mobile styles across every site.
  3. 3 Connect live data and publish Wire lists, libraries and Microsoft Graph into the page with Connect.

The result A branded intranet employees actually use, with content Copilot helps keep fresh, all inside SharePoint in your Microsoft 365 tenant.

Pricing models

Per person vs. per designer

The models are different, so a like-for-like total depends on how many people edit pages. Copilot is priced per user who needs it; ShortPoint is priced per designer, and everyone who views the intranet is free.

The payoff Copilot’s license makes sense for everyday productivity across Microsoft 365, and many organizations already have it. ShortPoint is the smaller, predictable line item that turns SharePoint into an intranet people want to open: one designer can brand and build for the whole company.
Decision guide

Do you need ShortPoint if you have Copilot?

Here’s the honest split.

Add ShortPoint if…

  • Your intranet is employee-facing and has to look on-brand
  • Comms, HR or marketing will build pages, not developers
  • You need more than native web parts: search and filters, tabs, directories, live dashboards
  • You want 250+ ready templates and AI that applies your brand automatically
  • Page editors don’t all have Copilot licenses, or you want a predictable AI cost
  • You run SharePoint Subscription Edition, 2019 or GCC High

Copilot alone may be enough if…

  • You mainly need team, project and document sites
  • SharePoint’s native web parts and site themes meet your design bar
  • Everyone who edits pages already has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license
  • You’re comfortable managing a Copilot Credits budget for site building
