Viva Engage
Microsoft Viva Engage is the enterprise social network inside Microsoft 365 — the product formerly known as Yammer. It gives an organisation open, company-wide conversation: communities anyone can join, storylines where leaders and employees post personal updates, and a question-and-answer layer that surfaces expertise across departments. Engage runs as an app inside Microsoft Teams, as a standalone web and mobile app, and embeds directly into SharePoint intranet pages.

Is Viva Engage still a thing? Yes — it is fully supported and still gaining features. The doubt comes from its neighbours: Viva Topics retired in February 2025 and Viva Goals in December 2025. Engage survived both. What did change.
The five surfaces
Engage is easier to plan for once you separate it into the places conversation actually happens. Three are included everywhere; two depend on licence.
- Communities. Open or private groups around a department, interest, initiative or location. Every community is backed by a Microsoft 365 group, so membership works the same way it does for Teams and SharePoint sites.
- Storyline. A personal feed per person. Leaders use it for direct updates that reach the whole organisation; employees use it to share work in progress.
- Answers in Viva. Questions posted to the organisation rather than to a team, with the accepted answer surfaced back into search.
- Leadership Corner. A dedicated executive space with AMAs and scheduled leader communications. Premium.
- Campaigns. Hashtag-driven programmes — safety week, a values launch, an engagement drive — with publishers, goals and participation reporting. Premium.
What has changed recently
Three dates matter if you are planning around Engage, and two of them are about other products people confuse with it.
- Viva Topics retired, 22 February 2025. Inside Engage, topics reverted to a simpler public topics model and the AI-generated topic cards disappeared. Published topic pages became standard SharePoint pages.
- Viva Goals retired, 31 December 2025. Nothing to do with Engage, but it is the main reason people ask whether the whole Viva family is being wound down.
- Engage live events retired, 15 April 2026. This one is inside Engage. Live events powered by Teams Live Events stopped being available for new scheduling; existing scheduled events are supported until 28 February 2027. New broadcasts should use Teams town halls.
If your comms calendar includes all-hands broadcasts, check what they are built on. Anything still scheduled through Engage live events needs moving to a Teams town hall before the February 2027 cut-off, and the two have different setup, roles and attendee limits.
Viva Engage and Microsoft Teams
This is the question most rollouts stall on, and the answer is about audience rather than features.
| Microsoft Teams | Viva Engage | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | A named group | Anyone in the organisation |
| Conversation shape | Closed, task-focused | Open, discoverable |
| Best for | Projects, daily work, files | Announcements, questions, communities of practice |
| Discovery by others | Only for members | Public posts searchable company-wide |
| Quick test | You can name who needs to see it | Value comes from people you would not have invited |
Most organisations run both. Engage typically carries announcements, cross-department questions, recognition and communities of practice, while the day-to-day work stays in Teams.
How Viva Engage fits into Microsoft 365
- Microsoft TeamsEngage runs as a left-rail app and as a channel tab, so company-wide communities sit one click from daily chat.
- SharePointThe Conversations web part embeds a live community or topic feed on any intranet page — the usual way Engage reaches people who never open the app.
- M365 GroupsEvery community is backed by a group, giving it the same membership, mailbox and governance model as a Team or a SharePoint site.
- Viva ConnectionsSits alongside Engage in the Viva family. Connections brings the intranet into Teams; Engage supplies the conversation inside it.
- OutlookInteractive notification emails let people read and reply to Engage conversations without leaving the inbox.
- Microsoft PurviewEngage networks in native mode store content in the Microsoft 365 substrate, so retention, eDiscovery, DLP and audit apply as they do to Teams and SharePoint.
Licensing and limits
The core network costs nothing extra on a standard commercial plan. What catches teams out is that the features a communications lead actually wants sit behind a separate licence — one that only needs to go to the handful of people publishing.
| Licensing — list pricing, varies by agreement | |
| Core experience included with | E1, E3, E5, Business, F1, F3 |
|---|---|
| Premium add-on | Viva Employee Comms & Communities |
| Premium add-on list price | ≈ $2 / user / month |
| Full Viva suite list price | ≈ $12 / user / month |
| Premium licences needed for all users? | No — publishers only |
| Copilot in Engage requires | Microsoft 365 Copilot licence |
| Hard constraints — enforced by the service | |
| File upload limit in Engage conversations | 250 GB |
| Conversations shown by the SharePoint web part | 2, 4, 8 or 12 |
| Conversations web part on a vanity domain | Not supported |
| Backing object per community | Microsoft 365 group |
| Purview compliance coverage | Native mode only |
| Engage live events (Teams Live Events) | Retired 15 Apr 2026 |
| Existing scheduled live events supported until | 28 Feb 2027 |
Licence inclusions, the 250 GB upload limit and the live events retirement dates are documented by Microsoft. The two list prices are Microsoft’s published add-on and suite pricing and vary by agreement, region and term — confirm against your own tenant before planning a rollout. Verified 1 September 2026. Rollout notes
- Check native mode first. Only networks in native mode inherit full Purview coverage. Tenants migrated from older Yammer configurations should confirm this before compliance sign-off.
- Licence the publishers, not the population. Premium features are about who posts, not who reads.
- Communities create groups. Each new community adds a Microsoft 365 group to the tenant, so community creation belongs inside your group governance policy, not outside it.
- Seed before you launch. An empty feed embedded on the homepage reads as a dead intranet. Have communities and posts in place before the web part goes live.
- Check your domain. If your intranet runs on a vanity domain, the Conversations web part will not render — and no amount of configuration fixes it.
Key takeaways
- 5 surfaces Three surfaces are free, two need a premium licence Communities, storyline and Answers come with any commercial plan. Leadership Corner and campaigns do not — and those are the two a comms lead usually wants.
- ≈$2 per user Licence the publishers, not the population Premium is priced per user but only communicators and leaders need it. Everyone else on a core licence still sees and joins the resulting conversations.
- Feb 27 hard date Scheduled Engage live events stop working New scheduling ended April 2026; anything already booked is supported only to 28 February 2027. Move all-hands broadcasts to Teams town halls.
- Native mode only Purview only covers native-mode networks Retention, eDiscovery, DLP and audit apply to Engage only when the network is in native mode. Tenants migrated from older Yammer setups should verify before compliance sign-off.
- 1 group each Every community creates a Microsoft 365 group Community creation is group creation, so it belongs inside your existing group governance policy rather than being managed separately.
- 2–12 posts The web part shows a fixed feed with no layout control You choose 2, 4, 8 or 12 conversations and nothing else. It also fails silently on vanity domains, which is the usual cause of a blank feed.
Getting Engage in front of people
Adoption almost always comes down to one thing: whether the conversation reaches employees who never open the Engage app. Communities that live only inside Engage are read by the people who were already going to read them.
The Conversations web part is the native answer. Place it on a homepage or department site, point it at a community, a topic, one person’s activity or each viewer’s own feed, and people can read, reply and post questions and praise without leaving the page. For a lot of intranets that is genuinely enough, and there is nothing else to buy.
Its constraint is the same one every built-in web part has. The feed renders in its own fixed layout and inherits the site theme, so it looks like Engage sitting on your page rather than part of the page. On a homepage designed around a specific grid, hierarchy and brand — the kind most organisations want on their front door — that difference is visible, and it tends to be the thing that makes a homepage feel assembled rather than designed.
Where ShortPoint fits — and where it doesn't
ShortPoint does not replace Viva Engage and changes nothing about how the conversation works. What it does is design the page the feed lives on, so the Engage community sits inside a homepage people actually want to open rather than beneath three default web parts.
- Branded hero, news, events, quick links and the Engage feed in one coherent grid
- Full theming — your fonts, colours, spacing — with no SPFx development
- Audience-targeted sections, so frontline and head office see different pages
- Editable by your comms team, not your developers

Common questions about Viva Engage
What is Viva Engage?
Viva Engage is the enterprise social network inside Microsoft 365 — the product formerly called Yammer. It gives an organisation open, company-wide conversation through communities anyone can join, personal feeds called storylines where leaders and employees post updates, and a question-and-answer layer that surfaces expertise across departments. Engage runs as an app inside Microsoft Teams, as a standalone web and mobile app, and embeds into SharePoint intranet pages through the Conversations web part.
Is Viva Engage still a thing?
Yes. Viva Engage is fully supported and still receiving new features. The question comes up because several of its neighbours in the Viva family were retired: Viva Topics on 22 February 2025 and Viva Goals on 31 December 2025. Engage itself was not affected, though one feature inside it was — live events powered by Teams Live Events retired on 15 April 2026, with existing scheduled events supported until 28 February 2027. New broadcasts should use Teams town halls instead.
Is Viva Engage the same as Yammer?
Yes. Microsoft rebranded Yammer as Viva Engage, completing the change in 2023, and has since retired the Yammer name entirely. The two refer to the same service, and existing communities, conversations, members, and settings carried across intact with no migration required. Since the rebrand the product has added storylines, Leadership Corner, campaigns, and the Answers question-and-answer experience, but the underlying network is the one organisations already had.
Why use Viva Engage instead of Teams?
Because the audience is different. Teams is for closed, task-focused work with a defined group: chat, meetings, files, and channels for the people on a project. Viva Engage is for open conversation that crosses the whole organisation, where anyone can join a community, follow a leader, or ask a question the wider company can answer. A useful test: if you can name everyone who needs to see it, use Teams. If the value comes from people you would not have thought to invite, use Engage. Most organisations run both.
Is Viva Engage part of Office 365?
Yes. The core Viva Engage experience is included with most Microsoft 365 and Office 365 commercial plans — E1, E3, E5, the Business plans, and the F1 and F3 frontline plans — at no extra cost. That covers communities, conversations, storylines, the Answers question-and-answer experience, and the mobile app. Premium capabilities are licensed separately through the Viva Employee Communications and Communities add-on or the full Viva suite.
Which Viva Engage features require a premium licence?
Leadership Corner, AMA sessions, campaigns, delegation for leader posts, advanced audience targeting, and the advanced analytics for community and network managers all sit behind a premium licence. Copilot features inside Engage require a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence. Premium licences can be assigned only to the communicators and leaders who need them; everyone else on a core licence still sees and participates in the resulting conversations.
How much does Viva Engage cost?
The core experience costs nothing beyond a standard Microsoft 365 commercial plan. For premium features, Microsoft lists the Viva Employee Communications and Communities add-on at around $2 per user per month and the full Viva suite at around $12 per user per month. Both figures vary by agreement, region, and term, so treat them as a starting point and confirm against your own tenant’s licensing before planning a rollout.
Can you add Viva Engage to a SharePoint intranet page?
Yes. The Conversations web part places a live Engage feed on any SharePoint page, sourced from a community, a topic, one person’s activity, or each viewer’s own home feed. It displays 2, 4, 8 or 12 conversations, lets people post and reply without leaving the page, and inherits the site theme. Two constraints are worth knowing: it offers no control over its own layout, and it does not work on sites using a vanity or custom domain.
